Are "You" in the e-Learning Department?

by Lisa Stortz, Strategic Relationship Manager

We have been fortunate enough to be teaching the ASTD e-Learning Certificate Program for over four years. We typically hear the phrase, “I am the e-learning department.”  We truly understand the challenges and struggles that go along with this situation.

We’d like to learn more about some of the design challenges you’re facing. How are the challenges affecting your day-to-day development of engaging e-learning? Just simply share a challenge or two with us.  In return, we will pick several and put our proven strategy to work and offer some design ideas  to you.  Just  reply back to this blog posting.

No cost for our thoughts ---- We'll learn a lot from you and want to give back in return.

Love to hear from you!

I'm actually a little bit better off than being a one-person e-learning department in that I'm the developer/graphic designer and I work with two half time instructional designers. Still not ideal. The biggest roadblock I'm hitting right now is software. I'm not a coder or a scripter but I've gotten good enough at Adobe Authorware to usually do what we envision (sometimes with a little help from the usergroup). But with Authorware no longer being supported by Adobe, we are looking for another solution. There's just nothing out there that is as good that doesn't require scripting or years of using the product to really get it to do what you want.

The instructional design certificate info has helped a lot with making simple interactions that lead to good learning. But we seem to get stuck on the same ideas over and over. How about some more examples or discussions around simple but GOOD interactions using a product like Captivate 4?

I handle process related training for my org as Instructional analyst. For variation in process, managing content authroing and bringing a WBT in swift time is the challenge I have. Please let me know how we can effectively pull the content pages given by SME and create a course which is SCORM compliant
