The U. S. Department of Education published an extensive report in 2009 regarding the Evaluation of Evidence-Based Practices in Online Learning: A Meta-Analysis and Review of Online Learning Studies. Some of the results that are of particular interest to educators in the adult corporate and non-profit sectors include:
- “Students who took all or part of their class online performed better, on average, than those taking the same course through traditional face-to-face instruction” (p. xiv).1

- “Instruction combining online and face-to-face elements has a larger advantage relative to purely face-to-face instruction than did purely online instruction” (p. xv).
- Learner type and the subject of the instruction did not impact the results (p. xv and xvi).
This important report puts those who devote their time to educating adult professionals into a crossroads position. Is it time to take a serious look at changing face-to-face instruction to online or true blended learning experiences, not only because of cost savings, but because of learner outcomes?
